Medifast Diet: Read This Before You Try It

The Medifast diet works in two ways. The first part of plan is low in fat and nutritionally balanced. Your body is provided everything that it physically needs to function. Your wants don’t happen to be included, such as chips or ice cream, but your body will get everything that it needs. The second part of the plan works by controlling the size of the portions that you eat.

This is half of what you are used to eating.

The second step of the Medifast diet plan happens once you have reached your weight loss goal. This is a transitional stage that weans yourself off the diet plan food and back onto regular food.

The third step of the plan is to maintain your new weight. For three months, you must chose your meals carefully, having no more than 1500 calories a day. This gives your body time to adjust to your new weight.

Meal Plan

The meal plan is what makes the Medifast diet unique from its competitors. When it is time to eat, all you need to do is open the package and consume. The more complicated meals require nothing more than adding water and stirring before heating or chilling as needed.

You are also expected to drink large amounts of water on this diet plan. You should drink 64 ounces of actual water every day. Any drink that is not pure water is considered an additional drink, and does not count toward your goal of 64 ounces of water a day.

The pros of the Medifast diet plan are many. The plan comes with different versions for different genders. There are different plans for special medical needs such as diabetes. Eating frequently helps to keep your hunger controlled, and a diet that you aren’t hungry during is a diet many people will stick to.

The negative side of the Medifast plan includes the occasional side effect. Some people don’t feel well when they begin the program because their bodies aren’t used to so few calories. When the diet is finished, people have difficulty transitioning to a normal diet again. One of the biggest drawbacks is having to avoid social situations while on the diet. Activities such as going out to eat with friends or having a few drinks at the bar aren’t allowed, and the plan suggests avoiding such temptations altogether.

Common side effects have included leg cramps, sleepiness and fatigue, dizziness, headaches, feeling cold, hair loss, gas, and bad breath. Some of the other side effects can include menstrual cycles changes in women, and loose skin from rapid weight loss.

Diarrhea and constipation are other common side effects, but usually go away in a couple of days. If either of the last two side effects occur, the plan suggests seeing a doctor and increasing your water intake immediately.

The weight loss that many people see on the plan depends on how well you stick to it. The Medifast diet is designed to become part of your life. It changes the way you eat, the frequency of your meals, and your exercise.
